On an bright afternoon in late spring 1960, Ron Kennedy and I cut study hall and went to the Walden Street Woolworth for a snack. We were refused service. (Ron is black.) I got very angry, but Ron motioned to cool it. We left without being served. The Greensboro NC Woolworth sit-ins had been in the news for the past few months, but that was in the South.. I never thought I would encounter racism on Walden Street. I do not think Ron was surprised.

When Concord-Carlisle High School was identified as Concord High School's replacement, Robert Paul (1960 - graduated 1959; now emeritus Dean and Anthropology Professor at Emory University) composed a "pep song" for the new institution, using the tune of the People's Republic China de-facto anthem "The East is Red" as its basis. A pity it was quashed by the faculty once this was found out.
